Lighting on a budget

November 14th, 2008

Just thought I’d share a quick video on how to light on a budget.

You’re not going to get super white backgrounds with this but the effect of it is great for the money.

While you’re at it the site is also a new site for networking with fellow photographer - give it a try!

Down the rankings :-(

November 6th, 2008

The latest ranking on http://istockcharts.multimedia.de/ have us dropping a few places this week in the istockphoto contributor charts.

I wondered whether to post this or not, but thought I’d be honest and report the lows as well as the highs!

There may be another reason for it though. The charts still don’t have every contributor and until they do the position could fall until it stabilises.

Just to keep us happy here’s a couple of shots from a recent shoot!

Many thanks to Hayley for her time and input on these images and others in the series.

My Boys the Stock Photo Stars

November 3rd, 2008

A question a lot of people ask in various forums is "Where do you get your models from".

Well, two of our best selling models are our two boys - Matthew and Jakob.

They just love having their picture taken.

Matthew loves dressing up and making noise!

Jakob is still getting used to it but still has fun!

If you need a stock photo that isn’t in our portfolio then we’d be happy to shoot it for you. If we can use it in our library you’ll only pay the
istock price for it. Nice!

Take Care

Blogging Offline

November 3rd, 2008

Just thought I’d recommend a new tool to everyone who blogs!
Windows Live Writer enables you to write your blogs offline and then hit the publish button to get it online. It’s easy to add pictures and other great stuff.

Thumbs up from me!

How are we doin?

October 27th, 2008

Richard Hobson Photography submits stock photography exclusively to www.istockphoto.com

There is now a chart site that shows our position as a photographer on istockphoto.

We’re currently at position 1848 on page 37 of the chart. Now, the idea is of course that we increase our stock portfolio and the quality of it and rise up the charts! (A current drawback of the site is that not all contributors are listed, so in theory we could drop down a little at first but it should become stable soon.)

If you’re looking for a specific image for a publication, advert, report or website then check out our portfolio at www.istockphoto.com/richhobson

If you don’t see what you need then let us know. We may be able to shoot it for you and you’ll only pay istock prices!

Camera Dojo podcast

October 27th, 2008

A podcast aimed at amateur and semi pro photographers, but good listening for pro’s too.

I stumbled across this podcast by listening to the Digital Photography Show - which sadly is no longer with us. They cover interesting subjects from dealing with clients to what happens when equipment goes wrong. They also cover camera gear and other equipment.

A fun show - recommended!

RIP the Digital Photography Show Podcast

October 25th, 2008

RIP The Digital Photography Show

Apparently the last recorded episode of The Digital Photography sow will never be aired.

I mailed Scott Sherman on Facebook to offer my support as I’m sure many of the listeners of the podcast have It had a loyal following.

The great news is that Scott and Michael WILL be back with a new podcast. It won’t be called the Digital Photography show but it will be about Digital Photography and it will be a show.

Keep an eye out on Scott’s Blogs for details.

Shooting Tethered

October 25th, 2008

I thought I’d share my experience today of shooting “Tethered” with a model.

It was of course the camera connected to a PC not the model that was tethered.

I used a USB extension lead with a repeater built in to get around the issues of a long USB cable. It worked flawlessly. I used a D300 with Nikon Capture.

First the upside. Today’s shoot was with a new model in my home studio. The model was not just new to me but new to modelling. Being able to see the result instantly of changes to hair, facial expressions, looking in different directions etc was great and really helped in the “coaching” of a new model.

It also helped me in seeing exactly the result too. Yes, the screen on the back of the camera is great but it’s no substitute for a monitor. Using my own monitor I was also able to more accurately judge the colour output of the shot. Another benefit was a time saving one. Straight after the shoot I could point photoshop to the folder and import the images straight from the folder instead of from a memory card – much much quicker.

The downside was of course being tethered. Even with a fairly long USB lead and a small studio there were moments that I felt I was pulling on the USB socket on the camera. I’m not sure how long it would last to being pulled at.

So all in all a great experience and something I’ll definitely try again. I have some still life shots to do which would benefit even more I think, especially as the camera is fixed on a tripod.

Hope the experience helps someone!
